I joined the Great British Spring Clean Parliamentary Drop-In, where they are celebrating their platinum year of Keep Britain Tidy!
I was also joined by Cllr. Henry Higgins who is also a GLA candidate.
We learnt more about Keep Britain Tidy!'s manifesto, which involves:
- Deposit return scheme now: 20mill drink containers are littered, or end up in landfill every single day. We need a DRS now.
- Quality green space for all: nearly half a million people live in deprived neighbourhoods that are 'grey deserts' with no trees or accessible green space. We need quality green space in every community.
- Make polluters pay: 100 billions pieces of plastic packaging are thrown away in the UK each year. We need those who put the packaging on the market to pay the price of clearing it up.
I asked a Defra question to the Chamber recently regarding litter, it means a lot to me to protect our green spaces - and that's why it is one of my priorities, as the MP for Uxbridge and South Ruislip.
Our environment belongs to everyone, that's why I am backing the #BigBagChallenge - a plea to the public to pledge on the charity's website to pick one bag or more of litter from the streets, parks, and beaches in order to protect our vibrant communities and precious wildlife habitats.
I am also backing the #PlatinumPledge which involved picking up 70 items, 70 bags, or spending 70 minutes litter-picking!
The Great British Spring Clean is happening 15-31 March 2024, but you can always get involved any day!
