When I was first elected as MP, I vowed to be your voice, not just in Westminster but In Uxbridge and South Ruislip too. I have received many communications on Uxbridge Library, so I am aware of the strength of feeling and passion people have for the place, further demonstrated by the petitions raised and the recent rally that I was unable to attend.
I would like to make my position clear; I have always shared any comments and feedback that I have received from residents with the relevant Council Cabinet members, without favour as I am unable to influence a Council decision - but I can - and do stress how people feel.
A full business case is scheduled to be presented to the executive cabinet for consideration, where I am assured through the Leader of the Council that every possible aspect from access & carbon sustainability, through to preservation of our heritage will be taken into account when making the decision.
Hillingdon Council is seeking to achieve maximum value for local taxpayers. I am assured that value for money for Hillingdon taxpayers is a key factor that will be part of the business case. I would also like to understand what plans and opportunities there are for the existing site if the library does move to the Civic Centre as enhancing our high streets is a vital component.
It needs to be considered that Hillingdon Council has a proud track record of having some of the best library services across London and beyond. During times when many local authorities have closed libraries, Hillingdon continues to refurbish, re-design and enhance the entire library estate, maintaining our 16 high quality and accessible libraries.
To summarise, I have already made my views known that while I await the Executive Cabinet to consider the full business case, I support and expect that it must include full accessibility, enhanced services and products, celebration of our heritage, study and meeting spaces, up to date technology, coffee shop and provide more events and activities for residents of all ages. I also expect the Council to provide firm links to other well used services to such as the Family Hub, Adult Education, Citizens Advice and many other statutory services already located in the heart of our grade 2 listed Civic Centre building. At the same time, it must provide excellent value for money for residents, myself included.
If the business case to relocate the library does not stack up – then I will be holding the Council to account.
